Budapest Trip

Thu, 2024-05-09 (All day) - Sun, 2024-05-12 (All day)

Join us to Budapest!

From the 9th to the 12th of May 2024 (Thursday to Sunday) we´ll make a short trip to Budapest with 33 incomings and two organizers. We will meet on the 9th at 8:00 a.m. at the central railway station in Graz and we´ll take the direct intercity train to the Budapest-Keleti station at 08:37 a.m. It will take us about five hours to arrive in Budapest (official arrival time is 13:44, 01:44 p.m.). As soon as we arrive, we will go to the hostel in order to get our rooms and to store our luggage there. The easiest way to get to the hostel is walking there as it is just a bit more than 1 km away from the train station.

After that, we will take what we need (especially our phones to take a lot of photos) and head to the city centre. We have planned a relaxing sightseeing as it will already be afternoon and it will also serve us as a teaser for the next day, where we are going to take more time to look at some of the famous buildings in Budapest (Matthias church, fisherman´s bastion, castle, basilica and of course the parliament). The tour will be done by one of our fabulous organisers, Gergö, who will give us some insights into the culture and history of Budapest.

On Friday, our first main stop after breakfast at the hostel will be the castle hill on the opposite side of the Danube. There, our guide Gergö will give us a short historical insight of the buildings there. After that, there will be some free time for you to enter the church, the sightseeing platform of the fisherman´s bastion (costs about 3-5 Euros) or for buying some souvenirs in the stores around us.

After that, we will go down the hill again, pass the zero-km-stone, which is the geometric city centre and cross the chain-bridge, which is the oldest one in Budapest, to get to the other side of the river again. We´ll take a lunch break in one of the small parks and later walk along the Danube to the parliament. We´ll have antother informative and historical presentation of the building by our guide and after that we will go straight to the basilica, which is also closeby.

After another amazing speech of Gergö about the story of the basilica, you will have some free time which you can spend entering the basilica (the entry fee is abour 5 Euros) or just watching it from the outside. We might head to Margarete island, which is easily accessible by tram or by walking from the basilica. It is a nice place, where we will be able to take a rest and to play some sports (volleyball, basketball, etc.) or just go around in the city and visit whatever you want.

On Saturday, we will leave Budapest and visit Visegrád by train, which is a small town near Budapest. It has a beautiful old castle ruin and the Danube is right next to it, so the view from the castle is perfect. We´ll walk up the hill, which will only takes us about 45 minutes. Also here, Gergö will be prepared to talk about the history of the ruin and the landscape there.

Furthermore, in Visegrád we can also do short sightseeing, as it is a small town and has a completely different atmosphere than Budapest.

For lunch we´ll go to a restaurant, where we can try some typical Hungarian food. After this, we´ll travel back to Budapest by train.

On Sunday, we have to leave the hostel by 10:00 a.m., so we´ll leave the luggage there and go into the city one last time in order to go up the castle hill again. There, we´ll meet some guides who will bring us into the caves, which are located under the castle. We´ll have to split the group into two as there is a maximum of 25 people for the guided tours. The tour will be in English and will take about 90 minutes while we will walk around the caves and get some information about their history. It won´t be dangerous as all the paths are made for tourists so that we do not need any special gear. The only thing that is important is to wear warm clothes as it is usually cold in the caves (12 degree celcius = 53 degree Fahrenheit)

After the cave, we´ll get back to the hostel in order to take our luggage and we´ll leave for the train that departs at 16:15 (04:15 p.m.) and arrives in Graz at 21:00 (09:00 p.m.). On the way to the train station, there will be some ime in order to buy some food or snacks for the journey.
