Visit of the Joanneumsviertel, 16. 02. 2012

Since last year, Graz is one of 10 UNESCO - cities of design worldwide. Therefore, we’re going to visit one of the new architectural highlights of our city on Thursday, 16th February 2012: The Joanneumsviertel. It’s the new heart of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which celebrated its 200th anniversary last year. Founded by the Styrian prince, archduke Johann, in 1811, it was not only the first public museum of the Austrian monarchy, but today it’s also the biggest universal museum in central Europe (with more than 4,5 million objects).

Today, the Universalmuseum Joanneum comprises different departments and museums all over Styria (like the Kunsthaus, Schloss Eggenberg, Römermuseum Flavia Solva etc.). Here (video on youtube) you can learn more about the huge variety of the Joanneum’s departments. The Joanneumsviertel (Joanneums Quarter) is the new “heart” of the Joanneum, directly in the city centre of Graz. Its architecturally impressive new visitor center was only recently opened with huge festivities in november 2011. Today, the Joanneumsviertel is the home of the Neue Galerie (New Gallery), the Multimedialen Sammlungen (Multimedia Collections) and the Styrian State Library. Next year, the new Museum of Nature will open there as well.

During our guided tour at the Joanneumsviertel, we will not only learn something about the museum’s history and get to know the new museum’s headquarter, but we also will get an impression of the 3 exhibitions of modern art and architecture that are shown there at the moment (“Moderne-Selbstmord der Kunst?”, “Hans Hollein”, “BRUSEUM”). More informations on the exhibitions can be found here.

The tour in the museum will last until approximately 16:30.Then you will have a little time to alk around yourselves and afterwards, it would be nice to have a little get-together in a pub or restaurant to have something to eat or drink and get to know each other.
